I’m glad I ran into the guys of Vittles Film at the Indy Weekly Awards outing this weekend. It was gorgeous weather and lots of people jammed into the American Tobacco Historic District with vendors set up showing off their flair. As I was walking around congratulating the recent winners I stopped at a tent because I noticed a small postcard with a coffee tasting wheel advertising a documentary called “Cafe Sense”. I had heard about this documentary through Counter Culture Coffee but had yet to watch it. First, its a great documentary and you should check it out below or at their website here http://www.vittles.us/. Second, support what they are doing. Their craft is excellent and their story telling is superb. Hats off Vittles crew, I hope we meet again very soon!

There is one thing we certainly love to do at Jubala —> Share new espressos and coffees with YOU!

The best way to do this is on Friday due to a little event called “Free Espresso Friday”. Every Friday we buy 10 lbs of a “guest” espresso and give it out for free until we run out. Just like any other produce, every coffee varietals have their own unique tastes. For example a granny smith apple has an intense acidity that differs from a sweet honeycrisp apple. Coffee varietals are, for the most part, the same.

We are sad to see a favorite espresso leaving the rotation but excited to bring on a new one. This Friday we will feature the last of the Baroida Single-Origin Espresso from Papua New Guinea and next week will introduce our newest espresso, Apollo 8.0, consisting of 100% Finca Nueva Armenia from Guatemala. Here is a little bit about both.

Baroida Single-Origin Espresso

Tasting Notes

Rich and sweet with plum, cherry, and spice.

Name

“The name Baroida comes from an old traditional spirit that was believed to reside in a particular large rock that lies in the middle of the river that runs through the lands of the plantation. The reason it was believed a spirit, is that even the largest river floods could not move this one rock, even when all other stones and rocks were washed away.” – Colbran Coffeelands.

Farm History

Baroida was founded by Ben Colbran and wife Norma in the early 1960s, after purchasing the land from an indigenous man named Taro. At that time, the surrounding land was mostly grassland, and so for the first two years, Ben primarily cultivated vegetables that he would sell in the coastal town of Lae. In 1965, Ben followed the the government’s encouragement to plant coffee, which thrived in this perfect microclimate for coffee agriculture. Ben owned Baroida until 1979, when he sold the land to a trust, but Ben’s son Nichol stayed to manage. Nichol managed the operation until 1991, and in 1997, he bought the land back.

Unfortunately, in those 6 short years, the farm had been mismanaged and had fallen into disrepair, but the Colbran family immediately started to turn things around, all the while helping to create positive livelihoods for a lot of the local villagers around their farm. In 2005 Nichol’s son Chris moved back to the farm to work on many of the projects, in particular the cherry-purchasing Tairora project and the parchment-purchasing Lamari project. Chris’s fiancee Melody has also been an integral part of the Colbran farm, and among many other contributions, she has helped build a local school for the community.

People

Baroida sits just outside the town Kainantu in the Eastern Highlands of Papua New Guinea. This part of the Eastern Highlands is mostly rolling grasslands, but it has a remarkable climate and perfect conditions for growing coffee and other crops. It is commonly said that anything will grow if you put it in the ground here. The lowest elevation we found around the plantation was just under 1600 meters. Baroida itself was one of the first coffee farms in the area, and many of the trees around the farm actually came from the original Baroida estates in the 1960s. Baroida today is only one of only five coffee estates in all of Papua New Guinea.

Tasting Notes

Green apple, grape, and almond with a crisp acidity, juicy body, and floral, fruit, and mild citrus aromas

Name

New Armenia Farm (nothing to do with the country of Armenia)

People

Jorge and Javier take turns spending two weeks on the farm in Huehuetenango and sometimes, during the peak of harvest, they leave their families behind in Guatemala City to take care of farm business together. Although they don’t make a point of following the coffee industry (the famous El Inherto is very nearby and they have only visited once), the Recinos brothers are quite conscious of their farm’s natural beauty and have internalized their responsibility in a way that is unmatched by any grower we have ever met. Finca Nueva Armenia pursued organic and Bird Friendly certifications on the volition of these two brothers, long before a market developed for them and despite constant pressure to increase production and forsake the costs of certification. Without fail, these two are also unflaggingly open and good-natured, and Jorge in particular is never without a smile (we attribute this to his mother, Noemi, who shares the trait).

Place

Just outside the village of La Libertad and a mere five kilometers from the Mexican border, Finca Nueva Armenia is nestled in a crevice between two towering peaks of the Cuchumatanes mountain range. The farmhouse, wet mill, and dairy cattle range are located at about 1,200 meters above sea level, and the coffee fields rise steeply from there to reach 1,900 meters.
